Education Day: Education Is Vital For Nation and Individual Growth- Dr Isaiah

Educationist and public analyst, Dr Segun Isaiah, has emphasized the importance of education among the populace, against the growing notion, especially among the youths, that spending time in school to acquire certificate does not worth the trouble.

 

 

Dr Isaiah made the clarification as the International Day of Education, also marked as Education Day, is today celebrated globally, primarily.

 

 

Education day is envisioned to promote gender equality, inclusivity, and poverty eradication through quality education and democratic participation.

 

 

The endeavor is an investment that holds power to transform the present into a sustainable future, even as the day promotes numerous learning methods to bring together talented minds, ensure peace, and safeguard the planet.

 

 

Explaining his position on the usefulness of Education, Dr Isaiah established that education is a vital ingredient, if progress must be recorded in the areas of Agriculture, Technology, politics and health of a nation.

 

 

More importantly, he posited that education facilitates high moral standard, patriotism and selfless service , just as he mentioned the five policies on education in Nigeria as independence and self rule, promotion of human right, unity and independence of nations, workable economic policy and nations with developmental programs for the citizens.

 

 

The educationist opined however, that the protagonists of certificate acquisition as wasted effort, must have arrived at that conclusion because of the growing rate of unemployment among the educated youths and the usual long duration of strike actions embarked upon by lecturers of higher institutions, which he said has led many youths to becoming internet fraudster.
He further mentioned government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the education sector as one other reason time spent acquiring education is considered a waste.

 

 

According to him, a nation that allocates just seven percent of her entire budget to education is sending a wrong signal.

 

 

Hence, the protagonists’ conclusion that, going to school does not worth the effort.
Pleading with the government to make the provision of Library and Laboratories available for qualitative learning in the nation’s tertiary institutions, Dr Isaiah advised parents to only give birth to children they can cater for, even as he admonished youths to ensure they acquire good education, which he said could only guarantee a good future for them.

 

 

To celebrate the importance of education in bringing peace and sustainable development, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 3, 2018, to proclaim January 24 as the International Day of Education. The resolution was adopted by the United Nations in co-authorisation of Nigeria and 58 other member states.

 

 

The theme for this year’s Education Day celebration is : learning for lasting peace.
