The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has faulted the action of her predecessor Mudashiru Obasa, who showed up at the Assembly on Thursday, insisting he is still the speaker.
She spoke to journalists on Friday at the Lagos State High Court where Obasa had filed an application challenging his removal.
“I think to me that was just a show of shame because in our job we have numbers that form quorum,” she said of Obasa’s action at the Assembly a day earlier. “So if you are sitting with three or four members, you are only doing theatre.
Obasa Insists He Is Still Lagos Assembly Speaker
The Lagos State Assembly crisis entered a new phase on Thursday when Obasa who represents Agege 1 Constituency showed up at the Assembly Complex weeks after his colleagues elected Meranda Mojisola to replace him.
The ousted speaker was chaperoned by a retinue of armed, stern-looking uniformed security operatives as he walked into the hallowed chambers which he has not been publicly seen since his removal on Monday, January 13, 2025.
Obasa’s then deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was immediately elected the new Speaker, becoming the first female to take charge of the legislative body in the South-West state.
However, Obasao said he was removal never followed the tenets and constitution of the House
“I have always said that I have never been removed from office. I am not against any removal,” Obasa said, hours after he returned to the Lagos State Assembly complex in the wake of his disputed position as the speaker.
“If you are going to do that, you must follow the rules of the House. It is constitutional to impeach and remove. You have to follow the dictates of the Constitution.”
