More Than 840,000 Foreigners Overstay Visas in Nigeria, Minister Reveals

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has disclosed that more than 840,000 foreigners are currently overstaying their visas in Nigeria, describing the situation as a significant migration challenge.

In a guest appearance on Tuesday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today monitored by the column.ng ,he minister said the figure was obtained through the country’s recently upgraded immigration tracking system.

“Just as we have Nigerian overstayers in the UK, Nigeria is also facing the same challenge. As of this morning, through our upgraded system, we have about 848,290 visa overstayers in Nigeria. These are citizens of different countries residing in Nigeria,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo noted that irregular migration remains a global issue requiring international cooperation.

According to him, addressing visa overstays would help curb related crimes such as human trafficking and smuggling.

He stressed the importance of bilateral agreements, particularly in ensuring the “dignified return” of individuals who no longer have the legal right to remain in a country. However, he dismissed concerns that Nigeria could be pressured into accepting foreign prisoners.

“I have seen reports suggesting that prisoners would be brought into Nigeria. This government will not tolerate such. There is no way this administration will sign that kind of agreement,” he stated.

The minister explained that the recently signed Nigeria–UK migration agreement is based on reciprocity and applies strictly to Nigerian nationals.

Tunji-Ojo emphasised that the Federal Government has been transparent about the deal and that it does not include the transfer of foreign inmates.

He further clarified that the agreement differs from the controversial Rwanda asylum plan, noting that it excludes family members and that each case is treated based on specific legal conditions.

He also assured that Nigerians returned under the arrangement “would be treated with dignity” and in line with their fundamental human rights, adding that “no Nigerian stands to lose from the agreement.”

Meanwhile, the minister revealed earlier in March that the Federal Government has strengthened its capacity to track and apprehend visa overstayers.

He said this is being achieved through data collected over the past decade and the operations of the Nigeria Immigration Service’s Integrated Operations Centre and Network Operations Centre.

The development follows a migration pact signed earlier in March between Nigeria and the United Kingdom during President Bola Tinubu’s visit.

The agreement seeks to fast-track the return of Nigerian visa overstayers, failed asylum seekers, and convicted offenders in the UK, while enhancing cooperation on tackling visa fraud, cybercrime, and other transnational offences.

The mother of an eight-year-old girl allegedly defiled by an operative of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Bauchi State has called for justice, expressing deep concern over delays in prosecuting the suspect.

The mother’s appeal was made public through her legal counsel, Barrister Alkasim Mohammed, a human rights lawyer representing the African Child Development and Human Right Protection.

According to the counsel, the incident occurred when the victim was sent to buy a sachet of water at the residence of the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Muhammad Mustapha Makama, a neighbour to the victim’s family.

He said the suspect allegedly lured and had carnal knowledge of the minor.

According to report, the case was promptly reported by the victim’s mother, Salamatu Musa, at the E Division of the Bauchi State Police Command on July 5, 2026.

Following the report, the police arrested Makama, and he has reportedly remained in police custody for almost three weeks without being charged in court.

Frustrated by the prolonged detention without trial, the human rights organisation petitioned the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police.

While commending the police for arresting a security personnel, Barrister Alkasim raised alarm over alleged behind-the-scenes moves by certain figures to secure the suspect’s release.

The lawyer noted that the Bauchi State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice had already issued legal advice and an opinion on July 23, 2023, favouring the prosecution of the suspect based on available evidence, facts, and medical reports.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Nafiu Habib, confirmed the arrest of the suspect and assured the public that he would soon be charged in court.

According to Ibrahim, the incident occurred on Tuesday at about 6:12pm when two of the herder’s sons took the cattle out to graze.

He said the animals were later found dead at different locations in the bush after grazing, raising suspicions that they may have consumed grass contaminated with chemicals.
“Immediately we received the report, I alerted the MACBAN chairman, who directed me to proceed to the scene. We discovered that 42 cows had died. We suspect they may have eaten grass that had been sprayed with chemicals,” he said.

Ibrahim said Lawal rushed to the scene after receiving news of the incident but collapsed after discovering that 42 of his cows had died.

He said the herder was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Kwali, where he was admitted before being discharged on Wednesday after recovering from the shock.

He added that the chairman of Kwali Area Council, Hon. Nuhu Daniel Kwali, accompanied by Fulani community leaders, visited the family to sympathise with them over the loss.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday rejected the routine deployment of troops of the armed forces during elections, saying the Force should remain exceptional.

The electoral body specifically said the deployment of the military should arise only where prevailing security conditions require armed forces’ support in aid of the civil authorities.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who spoke through the Director of Legal at the Commission, Al-Hassan Umar stated this at Army War College, Abuja while delivering a keynote address at a seminar.

According to the INEC chairman, the Constitution clearly defines the roles of institutions involved in election management, arguing that the Nigeria Police Force remains the lead agency for election security.

The electoral body boss said, “As both a teacher and practitioner of the law, permit me to begin by reaffirming the constitutional framework governing election security in Nigeria.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly delineates the responsibilities of institutions involved in the electoral process.

“INEC is constitutionally mandated to organise, undertake and supervise elections, while the Nigeria Police Force remains the lead agency for election security under the framework of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.

“The role of the Armed Forces is exceptional rather than routine. Their deployment arises only where prevailing security conditions require military support in aid of the civil authorities and strictly in accordance with the Constitution and other applicable laws.”
