Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has revealed how attached he is to his mobile phone, saying he would rather be jailed than be forced to give up the device.

According to report, Dangote shared the view during an event in Lagos where he presented his “Vision 2030” plan, which focuses on advancing industrialisation across Africa.

The businessman was asked to choose between going for seven days without his phone and losing access to his private jet for the same period.

In his response, Dangote indicated that being separated from his phone would be the more difficult option, describing the possibility as something he would not accept.

“Ah… I think it’s easier you put me in prison than to take my phone away. So, you know, I mean taking my phone away is no-go area, okay?” he said.

The billionaire also disclosed that his phone holds more than 13,000 contacts, pointing to the scale of his personal and business connections.

“I know that would be almost… my number — I have that number since… Twitter… I have more than 13,000 contacts on my phone,” Dangote said.

Asked about the unusually large contact list, he explained that he does not readily block people, a practice he suggested had helped the list grow over time.

“Wow. Wow. I hardly… I don’t like blocking people, so a lot of people,” he added.

The disclosure highlights the role of mobile communication in maintaining relationships for the industrialist, whose business activities span several sectors of the African economy.

Dangote heads Dangote Group, a conglomerate with interests in cement production, fertiliser, manufacturing and petroleum refining, among other areas.

President Bola Tinubu has approved 18-month tenure extensions for Sylvester Nwakuche, controller-general of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and Kemi Nandap, comptroller-general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

In a statement issued on Monday, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser on information and strategy to the president, said Nwakuche’s tenure would now end on May 26, 2028, while Nandap’s would end on June 30, 2028.

According to Onanuga, the approval followed a recommendation by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior.

He said the extension would address a succession gap in both services and give their boards enough time to appoint successors.

“President Tinubu commended Nwakuche and Nandap for the reforms achieved under their leadership and charged them to consolidate these gains,” the statement reads.

Tinubu nominated Nwakuche as controller-general of the NCS in December 2024, and the senate confirmed his appointment in March 2025.

The president also nominated Nandap as comptroller-general of the NIS on February 21, 2024. The senate confirmed her appointment on March 1, 2024.

The NCS Act 2019 provides for the appointment of a controller-general to head the agency, with the appointment subject to senate confirmation.

The law stipulates a single five-year term for the office, subject to the applicable retirement limits.

Similarly, the Immigration Act, 2015, provides for the appointment of the comptroller-general of the NIS by the president on the recommendation of the Nigeria Immigration Service Board, but subject to senate confirmation.

However, the law does not stipulate a fixed term of office for the comptroller-general.
