Manchester United have signalled their interest in signing Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer, according to reports.
The 26-year old will be a free agent at the end of the season upon expiration of his contract at Craven Cottage and is wanted by a host of top Premier League sides.
Mail Sport recently revealed that Newcastle are understood to be in pole position for Adarabioyo’s signature after opening talks with the central defender.
However, that hasn’t stopped Man United from making a last-ditch approach for the former Man City academy graduate and the club are keen to open talks, as reported by Sky Sports.
Adarabioyo has been kept out of Fulham’s recent matchday squads after informing Marco Silva’s side that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract extension.
The London club had previously tried to get the centre-back to extend his stay, but the two parties were unable to reach an agreement on a number of contractual issues.
That paved the way for the experienced defender to seek pastures new, with his time spent in England’s top-flight making him an attractive recruit that wouldn’t command a transfer fee.
Newcastle are yet to reach an agreement for Adarabioyo and United are interested in hijacking the Magpies’ attempt to recruit the former England youth star.
United are set for a big summer of investment in the playing squad after a torrid campaign that has been hampered by inconsistency and injuries to key players.
It is yet to be seen if Erik ten Hag will have any say in the club’s transfer strategy as new investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team weigh up whether to sack the Dutchman in favour of a new head coach.
Executives behind the scenes including newly appointed technical director Jason Wilcox are already working on a shortlist of summer targets, with Adarabioyo one possible inclusion.
United announced on Tuesday that veteran defender Raphael Varane would be leaving in the summer with the Red Devils expected to bring in a defensive replacement.
