Ogun: Commissioner Says State Well Prepared Against Flooding
The Ogun State Commissioner for The Environment, Dr Oladimeji Oresanya, has affirmed that the state is well-prepared for the rains this wet season and it’s potential flooding amid concerns over floods in neighbouring Lagos State.
Oresanya, said this on Monday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief monitored by the column.ng
The Commissioner cited the dredging of rivers in the state as part of measures put in place to avert floods during the rainy season.
“Though we have done our preparation. For example, at Isheri, we have dredged the Oparo River: that’s a river adjoining the Ogun River to allow reticulation because when you have a lockdown, the water must reticulate itself and must flow back, and there must be a channel where it can take the excess while the tidal lock stays,” he said.
“So for us in Ogun State, we are prepared, and we are more than prepared, and the challenge will be coming around September ending to end the month of October.”
In the past weeks, several areas in Lagos, a state that borders Ogun, have been left flooded and commuters stranded following persistent rain.
Videos and pictures of the floods circulated on social media as residents lamented the lack of drainage and indiscriminate waste disposal.
Reacting to this, Oresanya said the topography in Lagos and Ogun, though neighbours, is different.
“For us in Ogun State, the flash flood and any kind of devastation you may have are man-made because Ogun State is steep. You have hills that can allow the easy passage of water when you have an intense rainfall within a very short time because of the tropical area that we have,” he said.
“In July, for example, we have more than 400 mm of rainfall, which is intense, really, for a tropical area. If it is a flat terrain like Lagos, you have a retention of that water for a long time before it can recede into the sea. And that is why you have that large retention of water, but within a few hours, the water will either be absorbed by the soil or it will regress into the sea.
“For us in Ogun State, you don’t have such retention in the early part of the year, talking about April, May, June, and July. July is when you have the highest, and whenever we have such intense rainfall, like the one we had recently, you always have a runoff.
“The only thing that can happen in Ogun State is that those run off; if you impede the flow channel, the water can be aggressive. It can tear off soil. It can tear up buildings, and if you find yourself along the line, you can be washed off. So that’s why we have a different terrain between Lagos and Ogun,” the commissioner explained.

LASTMA Impounds 84 Vehicles Over Traffic Violations In Weekend Operation
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation targeting ‘one-way’ driving, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and unauthorised garages across parts of the state.
The vehicles were impounded at traffic flashpoints, including Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu, where the agency said persistent traffic violations had continued to disrupt traffic flow and endanger other road users.
LASTMA said one of its major concerns was the practice by some commercial bus operators of reversing against traffic along the stretch from Iddo towards Idumota through Carter Bridge.
According to the agency, the practice poses a significant danger to motorists, commuters and pedestrians approaching the bridge, as they may have little warning that a vehicle is unlawfully moving against the prescribed direction of traffic.
The enforcement operation was, however, met with resistance in some locations, with LASTMA officials reportedly assaulted and injured while carrying out their duties.
The agency also said some individuals who allegedly attacked its personnel and damaged operational vehicles were apprehended.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the enforcement was necessary to address persistent violations and restore order along critical traffic corridors.
Bakare-Oki said the agency had repeatedly warned transport operators, commercial bus drivers and other road users against converting under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised locations into garages.

He said such activities obstruct traffic management and create safety risks for motorists, commuters and pedestrians.
The general manager added that the ongoing enforcement was aimed at improving compliance with traffic regulations, discouraging dangerous driving practices and protecting lives and property across the state’s road network.
He warned that individuals and groups would not be allowed to use public roads, bridges and under-bridge spaces for illegal loading, parking, vehicle repairs or garage operations.

Tinubu: I Promised Nigerians Credit-Based Economy
President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to moving Nigeria towards a credit-based economy.
The President gave the assurance in a statement posted on his verified X account on Monday.
Tinubu said the initiative would include the establishment of a loan guarantee scheme aimed at helping small businesses overcome barriers to accessing finance.
He said the scheme would make it easier for small businesses to obtain credit and support their growth.
According to the President, a worker with access to credit could buy what the family needs and pay over time, and a small business can invest today against the income it expects tomorrow.
“When I sought your mandate, I promised to move Nigeria towards a credit-based economy and to establish a loan guarantee scheme that would help small businesses overcome the barriers that keep them from finance.
“That promise was about something practical. We have been building the institutions to make that possible. Through CREDICORP, working Nigerians can access consumer credit.
“Our students can finance their education through NELFUND, while the Bank of Industry and Development Bank of Nigeria continue to lend to businesses.
“The National Credit Guarantee Company takes on one of the hardest barriers to business credit,” he tweeted.

Niger Mosque Attacks: 14 Members Of My Family In Captivity – Student
Muhibbat Abass, a student at Akram’s College of Health Science and Technology in Niger State, has said 14 members of her family were among the over 500 worshippers abducted when terrorists attacked four Juma’at mosques in Borgu Local Government Area of the state.
In a report on Sunday, Muhibbat said those abducted included her father, aged grandfather, siblings and other relatives.
She said she had stopped schooling since the incident because of the trauma and lack of financial support.
The terrorists attacked Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida and Gidan-Zana communities on August 21 while worshippers were observing Juma’at prayers.
Two days later, the terrorists released a video claiming to have abducted 500 worshippers, including women and children.
The cries of children could be heard in the video as the narrator asked victims’ relatives to identify their fathers, mothers, siblings and children.
Families later authenticated the video after identifying their relatives among those shown.
The affected communities subsequently released the names of 547 worshippers allegedly abducted during the attacks, contradicting the figure given by Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
Bago had described reports of more than 500 abductees as “social media hype”.
“33 were kidnapped at the mosque, and on their way, they kidnapped an additional 30 in a market, making a total of 63. So far, three of those kidnapped were killed and 14 recovered from them,” the governor said while receiving his predecessor, Abubakar Sani Bello, at the Government House.
The chairman of Borgu LGA, Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, also said the number of those abducted was “a little above 60”.
“From the record I have, those kidnapped were a little above 60. Those that were killed were close to 30,” he said.
But the affected communities rejected the figures and released a list containing the names of the abductees.
In the document, the Youth President of Dekara District, Zubairu Umar, said 547 community members were taken into the Kainji Lake National Park forest.
He said their whereabouts and condition remained unknown.
The governor’s comments also triggered a protest by residents last Monday.
Muhibbat identified the 14 members of her family in captivity as Abass Saleh, her father; Rasheedat Abass; Abubakar Sarkin Yamma; Hajarat Shehu; Lamrat Shehu; Jamiu Shehu; Maryam Idris; Adama Adamu; Rukayat Adamu; Hudu Adamu; Rahinat Ibrahim; Hindu Yahya; Barakat Ibrahim; and Swaibu Yahaya.
“We have been in a very difficult situation since the incident. Some people were slaughtered like goats. Our houses were burnt down. They stole our belongings, including cash and motorcycles. We lost virtually everything,” she said.
She said the abduction had also forced her and her younger brother to stop attending school.
“I am supposed to be in school now. My immediate younger brother is also supposed to be in school now. We are being sponsored by our father. He pays our school fees and buys food for us, but since the incident, we have stopped schooling because of the trauma, and there is nobody to help us. We are at home now.
“We are appealing to the federal and Niger State governments to rescue our people. While our loved ones are in the forest, we are in trauma because we don’t know their condition,” she said.
Another resident, Abdulkadir Idris said his father, Idris Bani Yakubu, was among the worshippers abducted from the Dekara mosque during Juma’at prayer.
Idris said he later saw his father in the video released by the terrorists showing some of the kidnapped victims.
“My father was among those kidnapped from the mosque. He is number 85 in the list of names earlier shared. I saw my father in the video of the kidnapped victims the terrorists released days after the incident. My mother’s younger brother and his pregnant wife are also in that video.
“I live in the same house with my father because I am the only male child. So, in my house, my father was taken during Jumaat prayers.
“From my maternal family house, four people were slaughtered. From my paternal family house, six people were slaughtered. At Gbezhin, my father’s younger brother, his wife and his children were among those kidnapped. My father’s younger sister was also kidnapped.
“During the attack, they stole our belongings, including cash some people kept in their rooms”, he said.
Idris registered that after the abduction, 39 people were slaughtered, with their bodies later recovered and buried.
He added that eight other bodies were subsequently discovered, but their identities could not be established because the remains had already decomposed.
According to him, the bodies were evacuated and buried despite the difficulty in identifying the victims.
Idris appealed to the government to intensify efforts to secure the release of those still being held.
