Petrol Hits N1,430 In Abuja As Strait Of Hormuz Crisis Worsens

Many filling stations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have continued to increase the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol.

The latest adjustment followed an N85 increase in Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s gantry price, from N1,265 to N1,350 per litre, amid a surge in global crude oil prices.

This represents a 6.7 per cent increase and takes the refinery’s wholesale price above the current petrol landing cost of N1,311 per litre.

Bent crude, the benchmark for Nigeria’s oil, was trading at about 107.92 dollars per barrel, and now to 108.21 dollars per barrel.

The increase has intensify pressure on downstream operators and triggered further adjustments in petrol prices across the FCT.

The implication is that motorists could face higher prices at filling stations in the coming weeks, higher cost of transportation and more financial burden on households.

Checks by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja showed that some filling stations had started adjusting their petrol prices upward, with motorists paying more for the product.

NAN observed that MRS retail outlets increased pump price from N1,350 to N1,395 per litre, while NIPCO retail outlets raised pump price from N1,350 to N1,430 per litre.

Mobil outlets also increased from N1,350 to N1,400 per litre.

A petrol attendant at an MRS filling station, who pleaded anonymity, said the price of fuel could increase further from tomorrow.

“We are currently selling our old stock at N1,395 per litre, but from tomorrow, once the new stock arrives, the price will be higher,” she said.

Dr Aliyu Ilias, an economist and development expert, said the latest increase in petrol prices could worsen inflation and deepen economic hardship for Nigerians.

Illias said the increase in petrol prices would likely translate into higher transportation and production costs, particularly for food and other essential commodities.

“I think there should be a way of absorbing these costs. If you do not absorb them, they will show up in our next inflation figures and economic analysis.

“The more prices increase, the more the cost of producing goods, especially food, will rise because everything is affected by transportation costs.

“This kind of change is not good for the economy at all, and people are going to face more hardship as a result,” he said.

Mr Owei Lakemfa, the former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU), said Nigeria must shield consumers from the impact of global oil price fluctuations.

Lakemfa said that the country should strengthen its economic planning and regulatory framework to d this.

According to him, a country like Nigeria, which produces crude oil and has a large population, should put measures in place to protect its citizens from sudden increases in the price of petroleum products.

“The ongoing geopolitical tensions involving major oil-producing and consuming countries, as well as attacks in the Middle East, are factors that can affect global oil prices and should not come as a surprise to policymakers.

“We have known that the conflict between the U.S. and Iran will affect the shipping of oil products. We know that.

“In basic economics, when you are close to the source of your products, you have advantages. If we produce oil in Nigeria, refining in Nigeria can not be the same as importing fuel. It can not be,” he said.

He said that importing refined petroleum products comes with additional costs, including labour, insurance, shipping and other expenses incurred in the exporting country.

He called for stronger planning and regulation, adding that domestic fuel prices should not automatically rise whenever there is a geopolitical crisis abroad.

“It can not just be that any time Iran attacks the U.S. or there is another conflict, the price goes up. We have to plan. And that is the only sense of governance,” he said.

He also expressed concerns about the structure of Nigeria’s downstream petroleum market, noting that it had elements of oligopoly and monopoly that could make it easier for major players to influence prices.

According to him, regulatory agencies must prevent any individual or group from having excessive influence over the price of a critical commodity such as petrol.

“You can not allow any individual or group to dictate to the country. That is why you have regulatory agencies. The government is there to protect the state and the people,” he said.

Lakemfa urged the Federal Government and consumer protection agencies to take stronger action against arbitrary price increases.

He said that changes in global oil prices should not automatically translate into equivalent increases in domestic petrol prices.

He further said that effective regulation and forward planning were necessary to protect consumers and prevent further economic hardship.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Chinedu Ukadike, said marketers reviewed their pump prices following a series of adjustments by Dangote refinery.

Ukadike said the frequent price changes were creating uncertainty for both marketers and consumers, as the cost of replacing products could change.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has dedicated the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration to teachers and learners affected by the May 15, 2026 attack on a school in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, stated this on Monday while delivering his address at the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Islamic High School Multipurpose Hall, Orita Basorun, Ibadan.

The celebration, held under the theme “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping our Futures,” brought together teachers, education administrators, government officials, labour leaders and other stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran, said education could not be transformed without teachers, stressing that their status, competence and welfare remained central to the future of education.

Adeniran, who noted that the celebration marked 60 years of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, said standing with teachers must go beyond ceremonial appreciation to include professional development, decent working conditions, teaching and learning resources, career progression, mentoring and continuous capacity building.

He added that Oyo SUBEB would continue collaborating with relevant authorities, teachers, communities and development partners to strengthen teacher quality and improve basic education across the state.

Adeniran also commended the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde for what he described as its strong commitment to teachers’ welfare, saying the government had consistently placed the interests of teachers high on its education agenda. He highlighted the payment of outstanding leave allowances inherited from previous administrations, regular payment of teachers’ salaries and abolishing of teachers’ six years waiting period.

He added that the Seyi Makinde administration has also approved the upgrade of teachers Grade Level above GL14.

Adeniran also assured teachers that their voices would remain part of policy discussions aimed at improving basic education, noting that the collective responsibility of government, education authorities, school leaders, teachers, parents and communities was to ensure that every child in Oyo State has access to a competent, motivated, supported and professionally respected teacher.

Comrade Hassan Fatai, in his address, said the celebration was being held with mixed feelings following the sacrifices made by teachers and learners affected by the May 15 attack in Oriire.

He described the victims as “heroes and heroines of the teachers and education struggle in the state,” announcing that the NUT would honour surviving victims with its Heroes and Heroines Award, support families of slain teachers and identify with affected learners.

The NUT chairman commended Governor Seyi Makinde, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, Commissioner for Education Segun Olayiwola, Dr. Adeniran, TESCOM Chairperson Mrs. Olubukola Oladipo, Special Adviser on Education Intervention Oloye Suraj Abiodun Tiamy and other stakeholders for their roles in the rescue and survival efforts.

He also praised the state government’s support for teachers while urging it to sustain improved welfare and working conditions.

Fatai, however, presented fresh demands on behalf of teachers, including full implementation of the Safe School Programme, integration of 135 teachers into the TESCOM employment structure, approval of inter-local government transfers for some teachers appointed in 2005, administrative flexibility on conversion and career progression, prompt release of grants to school heads and payment of outstanding 2025 leave allowances.

He further urged teachers to embrace artificial intelligence and other technological developments, stressing that protecting, respecting, rewarding, empowering and investing in teachers remained essential to strengthening education and securing the future of Oyo State and Nigeria.

The event was attended by top government functionaries, and NUT leaders in the State.

A major highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the Heroes and Heroines of Teachers Award to teachers who demonstrated courage and dedication in the face of the Oriire school attack. The awardees included the Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, Mrs. Alamu Racheal Folawe; Vice Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, Mr. Ojo Jonathan Adebayo; Mr. Olatunde Olutoye Zacchaeus; Mrs. Oladeji Jelilat Oluwakemi; and Mrs. Daunting Mary Temitope of Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota.

Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bauchi State Council, has threatened to withhold its votes from presidential candidates in the 2027 general elections unless its national leader, Bello Bodejo, is released from detention.

The group said it would not support the presidential candidate of any political party in the election while Bodejo remained in detention.

This is as it called on government authorities, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to intervene, saying the matter should be addressed in the interest of justice, peace and Bodejo’s family.

The state chairman of the organisation, Alhaji Sale Garbu, disclosed this on Monday at a press conference in Bauchi, where he called on the Federal Government to intervene in the matter.

Garbu specifically appealed to President Bola Tinubu to review the circumstances surrounding Bodejo’s detention and the charges against him, with a view to securing his unconditional release.

He said the continued detention of the organisation’s leader had created anxiety among members, while also expressing concern about the effect of his absence on his family.

According to him, Bodejo had contributed to efforts aimed at promoting peace and security in the country, particularly through initiatives addressing challenges affecting communities.

Garbu also urged Bauchi State governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, to intervene and support efforts to secure Bodejo’s release.

He said the organisation’s decision on the 2027 election was informed by its concerns over the continued detention of its national leader.
