Prince Dapo Abiodun, the governor of Ogun state has submitted that local government chairmen’s tenure in office can not be elongated beyond the period allocated by law before the assumption of office.
The governor said this while reacting to the lingering crisis in Rivers State, propelled by the elongation of the terms of office of council chairmen in the state by the state’s sacked House Of Assembly.
Condemning the decision of the Assembly members, Abiodun said it was a consensus among the governors that it will be dangerous and abuse of democratic process, to allow a council chairman remain in office a day longer that the specified term .
He said the issues is a concluded one which has been put to rest, adding that nobody should think he can just wake up and believe he can pronounce tenure elongation, as that would be a bad reference which will not do the country’s democracy any good.
