The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen to take charge of the Super Falcons on an interim basis. The technical shake-up comes as the federation continues its search for a permanent manager, thrusting the veteran straight into the dugout for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games qualification matches against Comoros.
Augustine ‘Cerezo’ Eguavoen will temporarily lead Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Team for their crucial double-header Olympic qualifiers in October.

He will be flanked by a highly experienced technical bench, including Nasarawa Amazons boss Christopher Danjuma and legendary former defender Ayisat Yusuf.

The 10-time African Champions will launch their delicate four-round knockout campaign on home soil next month, targeting one of Africa’s two coveted slots for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen will hold the fort temporarily for the impending 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures while the federation’s hierarchy continues its extensive search for a substantive, permanent head coach.

To ensure a seamless structural transition, the federation has surrounded Eguavoen with an entirely elite backroom staff steeped in local and international women’s football heritage.

Christopher Danjuma, the current head coach of Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) heavyweights Nasarawa Amazons, steps in as the primary assistant coach. Danjuma boasts a phenomenal record with youth setups, having recently guided the Falconets through a campaign at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

He will be joined by former international defender Ayisat Yusuf, who holds a staggering 68 caps for Nigeria, alongside veteran goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa to lock down the defensive and tactical departments.

The 10-time African Champions enter the qualification fray with a massive target on their backs. The Super Falcons received a automatic bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams on the continent, setting up a clash against Comoros, who advanced after single-handedly dismantling Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

Both legs of the decisive encounter are scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13, 2026.

To secure one of Africa’s two available tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Eguavoen must survive four rounds of brutal two-legged knockout ties, with potential blockbuster block matchups against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, or Cameroon looming on the horizon over the next 14 months.

Cristiano Ronaldo is facing trouble with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus after failing to report to training as scheduled.

As per multiple reports, tensions are growing in the relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus after the Al-Nassr captain was left out of Portugal’s last match.

Ronaldo was on the bench in Portugal’s 2-1 win over Norway in their UEFA Nations League clash on Sunday.

It was the first time since 2008 that Ronaldo did not play or come off the bench for Portugal in a game he was available to play.

The decision appears to disappoint the former Real Madrid man, who then reacted by not turning up for training.

According to Portuguese media outlets, Ronaldo refused to work in the gym and did not take part in Monday’s training. Ronaldo’s decision not to train reportedly did not go down well with Jesus, who is displeased with the reaction of his captain.

Report however said, the Portuguese FA has now intervened in the situation, with Ronaldo and Jesus having talks.

The situation has reportedly been resolved, with the Portuguese FA revealing in a statement that peace has returned to the dressing room.

Ronaldo and Jesus are both expected to address the situation in their press conference ahead of the clash against Denmark on Thursday.

However, it remains to be seen if the 41-year-old will return to the lineup or play any part in the game. Portugal currently top their group with six points, three ahead of Denmark and Norway.

Chelle Reveals What Super Eagles Must Do To Revive AFCON Hopes

Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has outlined what the team needs to do to revive their hopes of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations following their defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigeria national team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Djurtus on Tuesday evening, a result that strengthened Guinea-Bissau’s position at the top of the group and boosted their chances of securing the only qualification spot for the biennial tournament.

Speaking after the game, Chelle praised Guinea-Bissau’s performance, highlighting their mentality, attitude and physicality as key factors that gave the Djurtus an advantage over the Super Eagles.

“They were more aggressive than us. When you try to play, to cross, or make a cross, you need to have this aggressiveness in your state of mind to make the difference,” Chelle said.

The Franco-Malian tactician also lamented the poor condition of the pitch, noting that it played a role in the outcome of the match.

“I think they were better than us,” he added. “This is not an apology but they know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch but for us this is the first time and the pitch was very bad.”

Chelle revealed that he tried to change the team’s dynamics and approach in the second half, but the Super Eagles struggled to implement the plan due to the weather conditions.

“The weather was very hot too, so Guinea Bissau entered the game more motivated, aggressive, and we never found the solution.

“We tried to go forward to bring something new with the one-on-one on the wide but you see after ten minutes we stopped. I don’t know why.

Despite the setback, Chelle remains confident that the Super Eagles still have a chance of securing qualification, stressing that the team must record victories over Tanzania in both legs to keep their hopes alive.

“To be very objective about this game, this is not the end, we have many games to play,” Chelle revealed.

“We have two games against Tanzania in November, we have to win both games and after that, Guinea Bissau will come down to Uyo, we have to put them in the same condition that we are here.”

“I am very confident about my team, today was not a good day for us. This is the first time that I see my team like that, so we will have to go forward, both games against Tanzania are very important.

“After that there is the last game against Madagascar and then Guinea Bissau, a lot of things can happen.”

While expressing his belief in the team’s chances of securing qualification, Chelle also called on the fans to remain calm and continue supporting the Super Eagles.

“We have to stay focused and calm, we know our strengths and weaknesses and today was a bad day for us but I am still confident about my team and players,” Chelle concluded.

The Super Eagles currently sit second in the group with three points, while Guinea-Bissau lead the standings with six points and a superior goal difference.

Ikpeba Defends Super Eagles GK Against G-B Second Half Goals

Former African Footballer of the Year Victor Ikpeba has defended Stanley Nwabali from criticism following the Super Eagles’ 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash on Tuesday evening.

Reacting to Guinea-Bissau captain’s goal, Ikpeba acknowledged the quality of the finish and said there was little Nwabali could have done to prevent it.

He said on SuperSport: “They had the momentum. Look at it, and what a placement. Technically brilliant goal; it looks easy on television, look at it. There was nothing Nwabali could have done, hitting the post and going in. So, he knew where he wanted to go.

“Defensively, we didn’t defend well. If you don’t defend well in this type of game and you qualify for the Afcon, defensively, we were poor.”

Ikpeba highlighted that the Super Eagles’ failure to react quickly after losing possession as a major factor behind the third goal.

“They saw that we were poor defensively. When we lose the ball, they are not closing up on the striker or the number 20. So easy.

“The first goal, they did not close up on the striker. We lack closing up on players so we were punished. You can’t blame Nwabali for the third goal” Ikpeba said.
