Jose Mourinho led Real Madrid defeated the Manager’s former club, Internazionale 2-1 in their first Champions League group stage match. 

Mourinho who spoke after the match said he could not celebrate his club’s win.

The Coach said it’s difficult facing one’s old club hence, he did not enjoy the match.

” I tried to treat it as a normal match, but it wasn’t a normal match.

“I tried to stay focused, and for those 90 minutes, I did. But I couldn’t celebrate. You know, of course, I was very happy to win the match, but I couldn’t celebrate in front of them” he confessed.

Ahead of Atlético de Madrid’s first away match of the Champions League group stage against Liverpool, club president Cerezo visited the memorial at Anfield to pay respects to Jota.

Jota joined Atlético de Madrid in the summer of 2016 and departed in the summer of 2018. The Portuguese forward tragically died in a car accident in the summer of 2025.

Liverpool has established a memorial for Jota outside Anfield.

Prior to Atlético’s Champions League away fixture against Liverpool, Atlético de Madrid president Cerezo, accompanied by club legend Villa and others, visited Anfield to lay flowers in tribute to Jota.

He will be flanked by a highly experienced technical bench, including Nasarawa Amazons boss Christopher Danjuma and legendary former defender Ayisat Yusuf.

The 10-time African Champions will launch their delicate four-round knockout campaign on home soil next month, targeting one of Africa’s two coveted slots for the 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen will hold the fort temporarily for the impending 2028 Olympic Games qualifying fixtures while the federation’s hierarchy continues its extensive search for a substantive, permanent head coach.

He will be joined by former international defender Ayisat Yusuf, who holds a staggering 68 caps for Nigeria, alongside veteran goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa to lock down the defensive and tactical departments.

The 10-time African Champions enter the qualification fray with a massive target on their backs. The Super Falcons received a automatic bye into the second round as one of the three highest-ranked teams on the continent, setting up a clash against Comoros, who advanced after single-handedly dismantling Sudan 30-0 on aggregate.

Both legs of the decisive encounter are scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on October 9 and 13, 2026.

To secure one of Africa’s two available tickets to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, Eguavoen must survive four rounds of brutal two-legged knockout ties, with potential blockbuster block matchups against the Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, or Cameroon looming on the horizon over the next 14 months.
