The Lagos State House of Assembly says it holds the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu in high esteem and at no point link her to the speakership crisis rocking the House

The Assembly has been in turmoil since January 13, 2025 when Mudashiru Obasa was removed as Speaker and was replaced by the first female Speaker, Right. Honourable. Mojisola Meranda.

On Monday, the crisis reached a new level when officials of the State Security Service sealed the offices of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and Acting Clerk of the Assembly.

The heavily armed officials also invaded the chamber in an attempt to stop the plenary from holding.

In a statement made available to thecolumn.ng on Tuesday(today) by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, Mr Stephen Ogundipe refuted claims by some online publications that the First Lady was behind the Assembly’s internal crisis.

“We categorically dissociate all members of the Lagos State House of Assembly from this false and baseless claim,” read the statement.

Mr Ogundipe said “the report is purely a fabrication and has no basis in truth.

“All members of the Assembly hold the First Lady in the highest regard. As a distinguished former First Lady of Lagos State and now the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has made significant contributions to governance and national development.

“It Is therefore inconceivable that any member of the Assembly would accuse her of involvement in legislative matters or seek to tarnish her reputation. We firmly state that the First Lady has no role in any internal disagreements within the House. Any attempt to link her to these issues is entirely unfounded.”

The House spokesman urged “members of the press, as key stakeholders to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity by verifying information before publication. Responsible journalism requires seeking the truth and ensuring that reports are accurate and balanced.”
