PHOTOS: Gov’ Abiodun Plans Smart Cities For Ogun Urban Centres

Ogun State government says it is set to create smart cities in all the urban centres across the state through regeneration schemes.

 

 

The State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun stated this during the 2024 Ogun State celebration of the World Environment Day with the theme “Achieving The Smart City Agenda Through Climate Change Resilience And Urban Afforestation held at the June 12 Cultural Centre,Kuto, Abeokuta.

 

Represented by his deputy,Engr Mrs Noimot Salako Oyedele, Governor Abiodun said part of its regeneration schemes to achieve Smart City Agenda which will enhances green spaces , sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions in urban areas is the unveiled of housing programme aimed at transforming structures within Government Reservation Areas that involves over one hundred hectares of land in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode and Ota with other cities to follow.

 

He therefore called for the cooperation of all stakeholders especially Town-Planners, Architects and Environmental Experts so that government dream of converting those structures in the Government Reserve Areas as part of its Smart City Agenda becomes a reality.

 

 

Governor Abiodun also used the opportunity to praise the management and staff of the state Ministry of Environment for providing effective environmental governance especially in the area of pollution which the state is combating and wining due to its position as the industrial hob of the nation.

 

 

Earlier,the Commissioner of Environment,Mr Ola Oresanya said this year’s global theme was reviewed to reflect the peculiarity of the state ecosystem adding that the celebration was an opportunity for the state government to strengthen its element of strategic planning and enhance coherence among socio-economic and environmental policies.

 

 

He also expressed determination of the state government to create a new line of economy through the green bond and other green financing mechanism for decarbonization of extractive Industries by converting municipal solid waste and biomass into refuse- derived fuel and other alternative energy sources.

 

 

The highlights of the celebration was the presentation of awards to Environmental Clubs in various secondary schools, Industries for Environmental Compliance and for two local government, Ikenne for Open Defecation Free and Abeokuta South for been the Cleanest while One Hundred and Nine page Ministry of Environment Green Book Volume One which contains all the operational guidelines as well as vision, mission and core values of the Ministry and her sister agencies such Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, OGEPA and the Ogun State Waste Management Authority, OGWAMA was equally launched.
