Noni Madueke has been warned to maintain the standards and ‘behaviour’ he is showing now to continue to thrive at Chelsea.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino took a subtle shot at the attacker when he said it took him ‘six months’ to figure out what is required.
Madueke arrived to great expectation from PSV Eindhoven a year ago, joining in a £28.5m deal, but it has taken time for him to crack the first team.
The 21-year-old has had a peripheral role to this point as he adapted to Pochettino’s demands – but things now look to have clicked.
He scored in back to back games heading into this weekend’s FA Cup tie against Preston North End, and Pochettino does not want him to take his foot off the gas.
‘I am so happy – it took him nearly six months to realise what we expect from him,’ Pochettino said.
‘Players need to improve and he is improving a lot – his behaviour now, and the way that he has committed himself first, and with the rest of the ideas from the club.’
While Pochettino is thrilled, he is reluctant for the player to get too carried away: ‘Noni has potential and talent. He needs to do the things and behave in the future if he wants to succeed.
‘That is the platform for everyone and then it is about being right in your mind and being consistent in the way we propose they behave.’
Madueke, who will hope to be involved against the Championship side, has worked with Pochettino before.
The Argentine boss knew of his strengths and weaknesses long before they joined forces at Chelsea.
Pochettino saw the youngster rise through Tottenham’s academy from 2014 to 2018, before he departed for pastures new at PSV.
