Oyo School Abductors Reduce Demands
There are strong indications that the 39 abducted schoolchildren and seven teachers from Ahoro-Esinle, Yawota and Alawusa communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State may regain their freedom any time soon as security operatives intensify rescue efforts.
Recall that on May 15, 2026, terrorists stormed three schools in Oriire council area, abducting 46 individuals.
Report says troops have blocked all possible escape routes to the National Park where the victims are being held, even as
multiple security sources, familiar with the issue, have been quoted to have disclosed that troops and other security personnel involved in the rescue operation have surrounded a hideout within the National Park forest area, where the abducted pupils and teachers are believed to be held.
According to security sources, the terrorists have been “effectively contained within the forest”, with security operatives blocking possible escape routes and restricting their movement with the hostages.
According to the report, the kidnapers have reduced thier demands from the initial presented four major demands, including the release of detained terrorist commanders, payment of ransom, provision of two Hilux vehicles, and the implementation of Sharia-related laws.
Among those whose release was demanded are Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a or Abbas Mukhtar, and his deputy, Abubakar Abba, alias Isah Adam or Mahmud Al-Nigeri, both identified as senior members of Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimeena Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a breakaway faction of Boko Haram.
They were arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, last year.
However, multiple sources revealed that as security forces continue to tighten their grip around them the kidnappers have reportedly “dropped some of their earlier demands” and are now “largely focused on securing ransom payment.”
A report also mentioned that
the leader of the kidnapping gang is an indigene of Oriire Local Government Area who had lived among residents before allegedly becoming radicalised by the Ansaru terrorist group and embracing extremist ideology.
It was also revealed that the affected communities lie close to Nigeria’s border corridor leading towards Niger Republic and the Kainji axis, an area known for its challenging terrain and no communication networks.
Multiple security sources disclosed that intelligence reports had previously uncovered plans by terrorists to attack schools in the area, prompting preventive measures, including the temporary closure of some schools.

Monday Morning Protest Rocks Ibadan Over Insecurity, Roads Blocked
Major parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, were brought to a standstill on Monday as protesters blocked the busy Iwo Road interchange in demonstration against rising insecurity and the growing wave of kidnappings in the state.
The protest, which began around 10 a.m., was organised by the Take It Back Movement, a human rights advocacy group. The demonstrators occupied the strategic junction, disrupting traffic along one of the city’s busiest transport routes.
The protesters called on the government to take urgent steps to tackle insecurity and secure the release of 39 abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
Public outrage has continued to mount over the abduction, which occurred in Orire Local Government Area in May and remains unresolved.
Speaking during the protest, the National Coordinator of the movement, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the demonstration was part of a sustained campaign launched after the kidnapping of the pupils and their teachers.
According to him, the group would continue its actions until all victims regain their freedom.
“We will continue to protest for the release of all abducted victims until they are free. Government officials remain in the comfort of their offices while innocent students and their teachers are languishing in kidnappers’ dens,” he said.
The protesters, who carried placards and banners demanding an end to kidnappings, accused authorities of failing to take decisive action to rescue those still in captivity.
Sanyaolu further stressed that the campaign was not limited to Oyo State, noting that the group was demanding the release of all abducted persons across the country.
“We are demanding freedom for all captives in the North, South, East and West of Nigeria,” he added.
He also criticised Nigeria’s political leadership, accusing politicians of focusing on the 2027 elections while security suffer.
“We will not wait until 2027. By then, we do not know how many people will still be alive. That is why we are here in Ibadan, where the abduction occurred. Both the state and federal governments must act or continue to face mass protests,” he said.
The protest caused severe traffic congestion around the Iwo Road axis, leaving many commuters stranded for hours as security operatives monitored the situation.
