Southwest Speakers: Why We Converged On Lagos

Speakers of state Legislatures in the Southwestern part of Nigeria on Monday gathered at the Lagos State House of Assembly for discussions aimed at the progress of the zone.
The gathering comes few days to the Abuja meeting of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria where a national chairman is billed to emerge.
State Speakers at the meeting hosted by Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, include Rt. Hon. Taiwo Oluomo of Ogun, Adebo Ogundoyin of Oyo, Adeoye Aribasoye of Ekiti, Adewale Egbedun of Osun and Olamide Oladiji of Ondo.
The Speakers held a closed-door session after which Dr. Obasa told journalists that different issues relating to the growth and progress of Southwest were discussed.
“We looked at the progress of the legislature in the Southwest. Let me remind you that during the last Assembly, we all adopted a single Business Rules and Standing Order, which we have reviewed at this meeting.
“We also discussed the coming election of the Conference of Speakers. We deliberated on that because we have to be there with one voice. We have two Speakers, Ogun and Oyo, running for the position. So we have to harmonise our position before we go for the election.
“We also discussed the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) as it relates to the economic progress and development of Southwest. I am happy to tell you we made tremendous progress in our discussion and we have concluded that we will meet again to continue our deliberation. But in all, we have discussed in the interest of the Southwest,” Dr. Obasa said.
Confirming discussions at the meeting, Rt. Hon. Aribasoye, said: “We met to discuss the Southwest, the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, the coming election, the security of our zone, and the need for cross-fertilisation of ideas among the legislatures in the Southwest.”
Earlier, while being received at the legislative chamber of the Lagos Assembly, the Speakers told the State lawmakers that their visit had opened their eyes to further directions they needed to take for the progress of their individual states.
They commended the Lagos lawmakers for standing firm in their support for democracy, true governance and the leadership of Speaker Obasa noting that their activities have helped to sustain a virile legislative arm in the State.
“What we have seen at the Lagos State House of Assembly will guide us going foward, Rt. Hon. Aribasoye said while describing Lagos as a true ‘Centre of Excellence’ and thanking Dr. Obasa for being a worthy leader to Southwest Speakers.
Rt. Hon. Oladiji, who said it was his first time visiting the Lagos Assembly, described what he had seen as a true reflection of why the State continues to make legislative progress under Speaker Obasa.
Stressing that the Southwest remains the leading democratic light in Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Egbedun added: “I want to use this opportunity to tell you that Speaker Obasa is our leader.”
On his part, Rt. Hon. Oluomo commended the Lagos lawmakers for standing with Obasa, who he described as making history for being the longest serving Speaker in Nigeria.
Further addressing the Lagos lawmakers, Rt. Hon. Ogundoyin thanked Dr. Obasa for always helping the Southwest Speakers with his knowledge and experience.
In his response, Dr. Obasa described his colleagues at the Lagos Assembly as dedicated, loyal to positive causes and passionate for the progress of the legislature and the State.

NDLEA 10,000 Captagon Pills in Kwara Crackdown
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says its operatives have intercepted a consignment of the stimulant drug captagon in Kwara State, alongside other seizures recorded in separate operations across the country.
The agency said this comes barely five years after it recorded the first seizure of captagon in Africa at the Apapa Port in Lagos.
The drug is believed to be a highly addictive amphetamine-type stimulant widely abused in parts of the Middle East.
According to the NDLEA, the drug produces intense euphoria, suppresses fatigue, and can keep users awake for days while reducing fear and increasing reckless behaviour.
The agency also linked its “production and sale to militias and large criminal groups linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria”, which it said use it as a “means of generating funds for weapons and combatants and for use as a stimulant to keep them fighting.”
The NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, who disclosed this in a statement made available to The column.ng on Sunday, said, “The latest seizure of captagon, whose street value costs as much as $25 a pill, was made on Tuesday, 21st April 2026, when NDLEA operatives on patrol along Bode Saadu Road, Kwara State, intercepted a trailer conveying passengers.
“A search conducted on one of the passengers, 33-year-old Nasiru Mu’azu, led to the recovery of 10 packs of Captagon consisting of 10,000 pills and nine packets of Tapentadol 250mg.”
In a separate operation at the same Bode Saadu patrol point on Friday, 24 April, NDLEA officers intercepted a trailer marked RMY-70XA.
“A search of the truck led to the recovery of 155,900 capsules of tramadol, 6,000 ampoules of tramadol injection, 3,000 tablets of co-codamol, and 9,000 tablets of bromazepam concealed in a false compartment constructed under the trailer.
“A 24-year-old suspect, Aminu Isah, has been taken into custody in connection with the seizure,” the statement added.
In Oyo State on 21 April, operatives intercepted a commercial bus with registration number MNA 963 ZY at Akinyele along the Ibadan–Oyo Expressway while en route to Sokoto.
“A 33-year-old passenger, Eze Prince Emeka, was brought down from the vehicle and taken for a body scan, which confirmed ingestion of illicit drugs.
“The suspect, who claims to be a businessman in Sokoto, was subsequently placed under close excretion observation during which he excreted a total of forty-five (45) pellets of cocaine with a total weight of 1.043 kilograms in three excretions,” Babafemi said.
He added, “The decision to travel by road to Sokoto with the illicit drug in his stomach was to evade detection by NDLEA at the airport, while further investigation reveals that upon arrival in Sokoto, the suspect was to excrete the pellets, rest for a few days, and subsequently re-ingest the substances to continue the journey through the trans-Saharan routes, with Algeria as a transit point and possible final destination in Europe.
In Edo State, NDLEA operatives on patrol along the Benin–Lagos Expressway on Saturday, 25 April, intercepted a truck marked NLC 146 FC conveying 1,196,000 pills of pharmaceutical opioids.
Two suspects, Osagie Igbinibo, 43, and Omijie Malik, 44, were arrested in connection with the seizure of the consignment, which was reportedly heading to Onitsha, Anambra State.
In Lagos, a suspect, Rasheed Ibuowo, 40, was arrested at Mile 2 Expressway on Saturday, 25 April, while conveying 810 kilograms of Arizona, a strain of cannabis.
In Bauchi State, another suspect, Muktar Bello, 35, was arrested on Wednesday, 22 April, along Misau Road, Azare/Katagum LGA, with 288 blocks of skunk weighing 154.5 kilograms.
NDLEA operatives in Ekiti State recovered 466.8 kilograms of skunk from the house of a suspect, Layit John Matthew, 56, at Ilaro Street, Isinbode-Ekiti. The agency said the drugs were intended for transportation to Yola, Adamawa State.
In Cross River State, about 20,000 kilograms of cannabis were destroyed on eight hectares of farmland in the Uyanga community, Akamkpa LGA, on Saturday, 25 April. The operation, supported by soldiers, also led to the recovery of 170 kilograms of processed cannabis.
In Niger State, 394 pieces of improvised explosive device components were seized from a suspect, Mohammed Aliyu, 26, along the Kontagora–Zuru Road.
He was reportedly transporting the materials in a Toyota vehicle with registration number KNT 617 AE to Shadadi, Mariga LGA. The suspect and exhibits are to be transferred to the relevant security agency for further investigation.
The agency also said its commands across the country continued sensitisation activities under its War Against Drug Abuse campaign in schools, worship centres, workplaces and communities during the week.
These included enlightenment lectures at Mallam Salisu Islamic School, Paiko, Niger State; Madarasatul Abdulrahman Bin Auf Litahafizul Quran, Kano; Sani Zango Daura Model Primary School, Katsina; and a community engagement in Badagry, Lagos State.
The Zonal Commander, Zone 4 Command, ACGN Bridget Viashiama, also led a WADA advocacy visit to the Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended officers of the Kwara, Oyo, Edo, Cross River, Bauchi, Ekiti, Niger and Lagos Commands for their operations and urged them to sustain the momentum in both enforcement and sensitisation activities.
He described the seizure of 10,000 Captagon pills in Kwara as a significant blow to drug syndicates attempting to revive a trafficking route that had been largely inactive since the Apapa Port seizure five years ago.
Marwa said the interception was a warning against attempts to expand Captagon trafficking networks, adding that the drug is often linked to insecurity due to its stimulant effects.
“We are not just seizing pills; we are disrupting the fuel that powers violence in our communities. Our operatives remain on high alert across all frontiers to ensure this illicit trade finds no foothold,” he said.

FG Moves to Ban Unrated Textbooks in Schools by September 2026
The Federal Government has announced the introduction of a National Textbook Ranking System for primary, junior and senior secondary schools as part of efforts to improve quality and standardisation in Nigeria’s education sector.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the Ministry of Education said the initiative is designed to curb the proliferation of substandard textbooks and ensure that only curriculum-compliant and high-quality materials are used in classrooms.
The statement said the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council will retain its statutory responsibility of approving textbooks.
“Approved textbooks will now undergo a structured national ranking process to identify the most suitable options for each subject and level,” the statement said.
“Only a limited number of top-ranked textbooks will be approved, ensuring improved quality control and consistency nationwide,” the statement added.
The statement noted that the policy also stipulates that any textbook that is not ranked under the new system will not be allowed for use in schools, regardless of its previous approval status.
“Under this policy, any textbook not ranked will not be permitted for use, regardless of prior licensing status,” the statement said.
The ministry also disclosed that implementation of the new system will begin in September 2026 after consultations with stakeholders and the completion of the evaluation framework.
“The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving learning outcomes and ensuring access to high-quality educational resources,” the statement added.

Nigerian Worker Found Dead at Workplace in UK
For the third time in April, a Nigerian, Ademola Oke, has died after being found unresponsive at his workplace in the United Kingdom.
This is just as the family appealed for public support following his sudden death.
Report gathered from a support appeal published by a close family friend, Adejonwo Odutola, on the popular fundraising platform, GoFundMe, that the incident occurred on April 18.
Odutola explained that Ademola had left home that morning in good health and remained in contact with his wife throughout the day, with no indication of any illness.
He said the deceased was later found unresponsive at his workplace by a colleague who arrived for a night shift.
Odutola wrote, “On 18th April, 2026, Ademola, 37 years old, left home in the morning hale and hearty, with no signs of illness. He was in contact with his wife during the day, and they even shared a WhatsApp message at 2:08 pm—everything seemed normal.
“Tragically and without warning, Ademola passed away suddenly while at work. Later in the day, a colleague arriving for their shift at night in the service user’s house found him seated on a sofa, unresponsive.”
He added that emergency services were immediately contacted, but he was confirmed dead at the scene.
According to him, the sudden loss has left Ademola’s 31-year-old wife in shock and grief, now solely responsible for caring for their two young children, aged six and two.
Odutola described the deceased as a loving husband and devoted father, whose death has had a profound impact on his family and loved ones.
He noted that the fundraising effort was initiated to support funeral arrangements and provide financial assistance for the children as the family adjusts to life without him.
The appeal called on Nigerians in the UK and the wider public to support the bereaved family, stressing that every contribution, no matter how small, would be appreciated.
“This cause is deeply important to me because I have seen firsthand the love within this family and the profound impact this loss has had on them. No family should have to endure such heartbreak while also facing financial uncertainty.
“The funds raised will go towards funeral expenses and ongoing support for the children as the family begins to navigate life without their husband and father,” he added.
It also urged those unable to donate to share the appeal and keep the family in their thoughts during the difficult period.
At the time of filing this report, a sum of £4,509 had been raised out of the £8,000 target.
This is the third incident of a Nigerian based in the United Kingdom dying in April.
PUNCH Metro reported on April 20 that barely one week after a Nigerian mother of three died of cancer in the United Kingdom, another Nigerian father of three, identified simply as Herbert, was found dead in his apartment.
An X user identified as ‘The Stress Manager’ had disclosed that Herbert, who lived in Thornaby, died suddenly in his sleep, in what relatives described as a shocking and heartbreaking incident.
